St Mark's

St Mark’s is a collection of 44 new social homes for Shettleston Housing Association, comprising of 19 flats, 8 cottage flats and 17 houses, located on the former St Marks Primary School in the Shettleston Area of Glasgow.
 
Split into two sections to fit into the existing plateaus on the site, the top half features two flatted blocks which benefit from terrific views across the nearby Tollcross Park to the east, and the city centre to the west. The lower half features housing arranged around two landscaped courtyards connected by a mews lane.
 
The design team created an effective solution to mediate the two site plateaus - a gabion wall filled with material generated from the manipulation of the site levels, meaning there was no need to dispose of any material off site.
 
The unique site layout generates a strong sense of place, providing opportunities for social interactions between the residents.
