Inclusive design can take many different forms; it might mean designing for an end user with very specific needs, or ensuring we are allowing for future flexibility, or engaging with communities. This month we have been reflecting on some of the projects we’re working on and the ways in which they explore and celebrate inclusivity.
The ab+c team are currently working with @capabilityscotland Scotland to create a centre for excellence that delivers exemplar care, and innovative homes for individuals with complex needs.
At the beginning of the project, we spent several days at Upper Springland, getting to know residents in their existing homes while observing their spaces and how they use them. The team shadowed some of the support workers, experiencing a ‘day in the life’, which provided us with the necessary context to begin exploring proposals for their new homes in Bertha Park.
Since then, we have gone through an intensive period of co-production with both the residents and the various groups of staff who contribute so much to life at Upper Springland.
Through building 1:1 mock-ups, testing ideas, and working through an iterative design process, we hope to create homes that allow every resident to live to their full potential.
